Climate action · Kisii County
Start a conversation ↗
A world where climate action restores landscapes, strengthens livelihoods and creates lasting prosperity.
We connect industry, agriculture and communities to reduce emissions, store carbon and turn local resources into lasting value.
Impact at scale

Transforming communities through biochar, biodigesters and agroforestry.
Our approach connects industry, households and landscapes, so resources circulate and communities benefit.
Explore project ↗Biochar · Circular carbon
From unwanted residue to value for farms and industry.
Kisii grows around 75,000 tonnes of avocado a year. In its first year, our partner oil plant will press 20,000 tonnes of that fruit. Only a fraction becomes oil. The remaining 70 to 80% is waste that currently has nowhere to go.
County-wide biomass availability

Locally available biomass becomes a valuable input.

The farms around the plant add a second waste stream. Families grow corn to eat, and the leftover cobs pile up season after season. Most end up burnt in the open, sending smoke and CO₂ into the air.
We close the loop
S&R Imara collects both waste streams and converts them into value through controlled gasification.
Biochar
Returned to farms as a carbon-rich soil input that supports moisture and nutrient retention.
Syngas
Returned to the avocado oil plant as process heat, reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

Biodigesters · Clean energy
Clean cooking energy from livestock waste.
Across Kisii, livestock manure remains an abundant but underused resource. Much of it is discarded or left unmanaged, even as households depend on firewood and farms need affordable soil inputs.

Resource flow
Waste becomes energy and healthy soil.

Livestock waste
Locally available manure is collected instead of being discarded or left unmanaged.

Biodigester
A controlled system converts the waste into useful energy and nutrient-rich slurry.

Clean cooking

Bio-slurry
Potential impact
5,000–8,000tof methane could potentially be recovered each year if 30–50% of the county's cattle manure is collected and processed.
Added co-benefits
- 01Less spending on firewood and conventional fossil fuels
- 02Reduced exposure to smoke from traditional cooking
- 03Nutrient-rich bio-slurry for farms
- 04Time saved and improved livelihoods

Agroforestry · Living systems
Avocado trees for income and resilience.
We support farmers to plant and manage avocado trees on their farms, with 1M saplings being distributed in the first year and a pipeline of 5M saplings over 3 years.
Living benefits
One tree.
Many returns.

Benefits begin before carbon revenue
Farmers can begin earning from fruit from around year two, while carbon value builds over a longer five-year horizon.
More trees. Resilient farms.

Help bring this vision to life.
Building a model net-zero county takes farmers, industry, institutions and capital working together.
We welcome partners who can help develop projects, support deployment, invest in infrastructure or create markets for the resources and climate outcomes these programmes generate.
